In Red Faction: Guerrilla, o jogador assume o papel de um membro da guerrilha, Alec Mason, como ele assiste o Red Faction para perturbar e derrubar o poder da Força de Defesa da Terra (FED) em Marte. Isto é apresentado ao leitor em uma perspectiva de terceira pessoa, uma partida da série «dois jogos anteriores, que foram tiro em primeira pessoa, uma mudança que Volition pretende ajudar o jogador ver e apreciar o ambiente em que são destruídos. Grande parte do jogo gira em torno do motor de 2,0 The Game Rede_de_Projetos, que permite a edifícios e outras estruturas de tomar dano, cair e entrar em colapso.
