"Star Trek Online" é um RPG sem limite de jogadores desenvolvido pela Cryptic Studios paralelamente aos trabalhos em torno do game de super-heróis "Champions Online". Ambos utilizam o motor gráfico proprietário batizado de Cryptic Engine, capaz de gerar e gerenciar centenas de personagens únicos e personalizáveis, além de veículos, naves, monstros e elementos de cena em tempo real, inclusive para consoles.
O uso do motor gráfico em comum foi decisivo para viabilizar o projeto dentro da Cryptic, que herdou a licença após o fim da Perpetual Entertainment. O antigo estúdio trabalhou no game durante anos, mas o código-fonte foi embargado durante o processo de falência e não pode ser aproveitado. Assim, a tecnologia criada e testada para "Champions Online" foi reutilizada para criar do zero um novo "Star Trek Online" mais rapidamente.
O jogo, claro, é baseado oficialmente na franquia criada por Gene Roddenberry que faz sucesso desde a década de 60, quando a série "Jornada nas Estrelas" foi ao ar pela primeira vez na televisão norte-americana. Desde então a marca gerou outros seriados derivados, assim como desenhos, filmes para cinema e vários produtos licenciados, incluindo muitos games.
